Virtual Coaching - How it Works
Virtual Coaching takes full advantage of the ways in which technology has enhanced communication. Unlike face-to-face coaching, virtual coaching is conducted over the telephone at times arranged between the coach and the client. These virtual coaching sessions can last 30-minute or an hour, depending on your requirements. You are free to call from your office or home, with no travel time or expense.
The days and times for Virtual Coaching are scheduled at least monthly with the client calling his/her coach on the scheduled day and at the designated time. For example, if you contracted to spend two, 30-minute sessions with me each month, I would reserve the agreed upon time exclusively for you. You would initiate each call and pay for any long distance charges.
The Benefits of the Call Focus Form
Before each call, I will fax or e-mail you a Call Focus Form, which you would return to me with a description of what you want to focus on during our discussion. In this way, we can get right to work on your goals and objectives, with me suggesting action options or new approaches, as appropriate. If you have been doing writing assignments between calls, you can send me your latest work for review and feedback.
My Virtual Coaching style is non-directive, whereby you will discuss your current writing project with me and I will work with you both to support your efforts and to assist you in determining the best strategies for you to:
- get started
- get unstuck
- modify an existing idea and/or manuscript
- make scene/character changes
- develop realistic dialogue
Best of all, you will have someone who can be a confidential sounding board, a strong advocate for your idea and your talent, and an accountability partner to keep you moving steadily toward the completion of your book.
A Laser-Focused 30-Minute Session
Although working virtually might seem impersonal at first, clients find that just the opposite is true. My responsibility is to ensure that you are comfortable in sharing your ideas and thoughts with me over the telephone. Remember, even for writers, our primary sensory mode is hearing, which in turn promotes active listening and learning. Our 30 minutes together is laser-focused, moves you along quickly, and we can accomplish a great deal because of our targeted topics for discussion. At the end of our session, I probably will give you a homework assignment to complete before our next virtual meeting. You also will receive unlimited e-mail support, in order to clarify your current action step or to ask related questions. Your work pace and the decision regarding how much contact works best is left up to you.
Don't Waste Time and Travel Expenses
Also, by working virtually, you waste no time with travel, and you can begin to use the results of each coaching session immediately. Payment is simple, and can be made either by credit card (MC/Visa) or by check, in advance of each month of coaching. You and I will sign a contract which outlines our mutual responsibilities. Typically, I ask for an initial commitment of three months, although other arrangements can be made at your request. My standard fee is $150/hour. However, this fee can be negotiated, depending on your financial circumstances.
